Will
A Drum Kit Give You A Quieter
Practice?
My
First Drum Kit
My musical
story began when I got my first
drum kit when I was about 10
years old. Actually, it was more
of a toy drum set. It was made
out of plastic for the most part,
and it was pretty flimsy, but I
really liked it.
I did not
know anything about drum kits.
All I knew that was that I loved
to bang on things with stick and
make loud noises. That, after
all, is the fundamental reason
for being a drummer. You have to
love noise. Otherwise, you'll
never get into it.
Becoming
A Serious Drummer At
Thirteen
By the time
I was 13, however, I was ready
for a more serious .. I had been
practicing every day for well
over a year, and even before that
I was playing fairly regularly. I
was looking at drum kits with my
parents, but they were a little
bit hesitant to actually buy one
for me.
The drum
kit I had was so loud, after all,
and a real drum set would be even
louder. Then we lit on the
solution. If I bought some drum
practice pads to go along with
the drum kit, I could play a
quietly whenever I had to you.
Adding
Practice Pads To A Drum
Kit
A practice
pad is basically a glorified
sheet of rubber. You can hit it
with drumsticks and It has a very
similar feel to an actual drum.
Unlike a drum, however, it is
much less noisy to the delight of
others living in the
house.
Simple
Drum Kits
The drum
kit I finally got was a pretty
small one. I don't have a lot of
room in my house, so I got a
simple basic setup. It had a
snare, a couple tom-toms, a bass
drum, a ride symbol, and one
crash.
It was
really everything I needed, and I
was really happy with it. I
started a rock band not long
after that. I get together with
some friends from school, and we
started playing after school In
my garage. The drum kit was
heavy, so I couldn't lug it
around town. It made a lot more
sense to play at my
house.
As I got
older, my fascination with drums
only grew. In college, I was
actually part of an ensemble for
drummers. We combined traditional
hand percussion with kit drumming
to make some really amazing
combinations of
sounds.

Gloves
There are a
lot of things in this world I had
no idea existed until I married a
musician. There are so many
different pieces of complicated
equipment that you could go broke
trying to buy them all.
Not
everything is intense or
expensive however, some of them
are rather simple and serve a
really great purpose. Things like
guitar picks and drum sticks are
some things that come to mind,
but did you know there was such a
thing as drum gloves?
I
didnt know until recently.
Perhaps that is because my
husband is a guitar player and
not a drummer.
I am not a
drummer either, but I have played
around with them before. I did
nothing more than produce a lot
of noise and few chuckles, but I
can see why it is so much fun to
play them and why you may have a
hard time with them if you
dont have good timing. I
can also see why drum gloves are
around, and I wonder how some
play the drums without
them.
You
normally have quite a good grip
on the sticks when you start, but
that can soon change, and the
drum gloves become a great
idea.
The
difference between drum globes
and regular gloves are the
fingers. Most of them are made so
there are no fingers, but the
rest of the glove is there to
keep the sticks securely in a
hand that is going to get very
sweaty, but the fingers are
touching the stick.
Just like
when you do anything with your
fingers, touching the surface
gives you better control. You may
have experienced trying to do
something like this with gloves
on, and if so, you know just what
I mean. The gloves are there to
help hang on to the stick while
allowing the drummer to handle
them comfortably. They can also
help prevent blisters.
There are
some drummers who love to wear
the drum gloves, and there are
some that cant stand to
have them on their hands. This is
to be expected.
Each
drummer learns and plays in a
different manner, and if they
dont use the drum gloves
early enough when learning, they
arent going to have an easy
time getting used to them.
If you know
a drummer that uses them, these
can be a great gift. Take care
though, and buy them new ones
exactly like the ones they
already use, or they may not like
them. When buying for musicians,
being on the safe side is the
best bet.

My Love Of Percussion Instruments
And Drum Kits Grows Daily
Playing in
the group was a lot of fun, and
it got me interested in
percussion even more deeply.
Since then, not a day has gone by
when I have not made time to play
my drums at least a little
bit. If you are the least bit
interested in playing, then a
drum kit is worth a
look-see.
