Learn How To Start Your
Own Record Label
The Facts About Becoming A Record
Producer
So, you want to become a producer?
Learning how to start your own record label is a bit easier
than most people would think. You see, there isn't that much
to starting a record label.
It used to be much more expensive as
it is now, but thanks to advances in digital technology, you
can probably start a record label with your own home
computer and a few thousand dollars worth of equipment.
The difficulty is not with learning
how to start your own record label. That part is easy. The
difficulty is making that record label profitable. You've
got to promote your recording lables.
I have a friend who recently decided
to start an indie record label. It goes without saying that
he did not consciously do so to make money. In the indie
rock world, if you make a profit you are almost guaranteed
to be viewed as a sellout. He did it for the love of the
music, or at least he thought he did.
On the inside, however, he had been
harboring a secret wish to make it big as a record producer.
He had taken a course on how to start your own business
before, and had many dreams of independence and fame and
fortune.
It is not hard to understand why.
After working in retail despite having a college degree, he
was sick of being broke and unappreciated. Nonetheless,
things didn't go the way that he wanted.
The Basic Truths Of How To Start Your
Own Record Label
The key to starting your own record
label isn't really about the equipment, or even the music.
The key is about people. Starting a
record label, unfortunately, has very little
to do with art. It is good to know a few talented bands, but
it is better to know a few talented producers. It is even
better to know some promoters, especially ones with big
industry connections.
You can work all you want on how to
start your own record label, but unless you have the
connections, it is unlikely that anyone will ever listen to
your music.
Sure, you can circulate it around on
the Internet, but this has never made anyone rich, and few
people have even been able to make a living at
it.
Vocal Tidbit: Wikipedia tm
says ---
"In the music industry, a record
producer has many roles, among them controlling the
recording sessions, coaching and guiding the musicians,
organizing and scheduling production budget and resources,
and supervising the recording, mixing and mastering
processes. This has been a major function of producers since
the inception of sound recording, but in the later half of
the 20th century producers also took on a wider
entrepreneurial role. [1]
The music producer could, in some
cases, be compared to the film director in that the
producer's job is to create, shape and mold a piece of music
in accordance with their vision for the album. Unlike in
film, the music producer is seldom responsible for raising
the funds to create the record more like the film
director, the record producer is hired by those who have
already obtained funding (typically record or publishing
companies, though occasionally the artists themselves)."
In my friend's case, he lost a lot more money than he made.
Starting his own record label was a big risk for him, and he
really couldn't afford the losses that he took.
Soon, he was selling off all of his
equipment to pay rent. If you are wondering how to start
your own record label, here is my advice: don't do it! Let
someone else keep the headaches and you do the performing.
It's much more enjoyable!
