The Basics of Musical Note Reading

It's good to become familiar with the basics before taking a music course. What is music made of, and how is it made? This is an important question...it's the foundation of making music, whether through your voice or an instrument. Music is made of several elements: sound, pitch and rhythm. When these three come together, you get music segments or an entire song! When you learn to read music notes through lessons, you'll likely learn about these and how they work before moving on to note reading.

The musical sounds are caused by sound waves, or vibrations of air molecules caused by some type of object. This object might be an instrument or even your own vocal cords. The pitch is the frequency of the notes, the number of times a vibration occurs for each sound. The rhythm is determined by the note duration or timing of the notes. These include Whole Note, Half Note, Quarter Note, Eighth Note and Sixteenth Note. Time Signature is written with two numbers, such as 4/4. This lets you know that there are 4 notes in a bar (the top number) and the length of the bar is 1/4 (the bottom number), or a Quarter Note.

Need to Know for Reading Sheet Music

Learn How to Read Music NotesWhen you learn to read music notes, you'll need to know how each of the note durations above and time signatures work. You'll also need to learn the names of each note, which are named according to the pitch. And don't forget about accidentals and changes in key. Musical notes are written by scales on the treble clef or bass clef, with sharps and flats to add flavor to songs.

When taking a music note reading course, be sure the course includes drawings of the notes/scales as they appear on sheet music as well as audio and/or video as aids for learning. This will help you learn to read music notes as if a teacher were instructing you one on one. There are a number of online courses that teach reading music, and most are very affordable when compared to hiring a music teacher locally.
