Take
A Trip To Yesteryear With Vocal
Music
Just the Sound of the
Voices
Melodies have been around
long before I was here and will last long after I
am gone. You guessed it! I am a great lover of
music, in most of its forms. My particular favorite
is close part harmony vocal music, a style of
singing, which became very popular when presented
by Barber Shop quartets.
These groups blended baritone
and tenor voices in a charming way. I also like
Male Voice Choirs, as in the choirs that sprang
from the traditional mining communities of
Wales.
Vocal Music Is Still In
Demand
This kind of vocal music is
still popular today, and the Fron Choir from Wales
is currently topping the Classical Album chart in
the UK. There may be no working coalmines left, but
the Welsh sing on.
Female VS. Male Vocal
Music Singing
For some reason, and perhaps
voice experts could explain this, the combination
of female voices does not seem so pleasing in the
classical mould.
Not to sound discriminatory
but I really don't care for big, female choirs as
much but female backing singers in pop and R &
B work very well. Small choirs, such as the Scala
Choir also work well; it's the combination of lots
of female voices that I don't like.
The Harmony Of A Cappella
Vocal Music Is Amazing!
A Cappella, or singing
without musical accompaniment, is an art that is
entertaining when performed by artists such as the
South African group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
They came to prominence when
Paul Simon worked with them on his seminal album,
Graceland. A Capella is a tradition in Africa and
this vocal music has become popular in the USA and
Europe.
Vocal Tunes For
Westerners
Western folk music too has an
A Cappella tradition. It can't be easy for a singer
to stand on stage with no musical cue to give him
the right key to sing in and then belt out a song.
This kind of vocal music must be the first known to
humanity, before the human voice sang out to the
accompaniment of a makeshift drum.
Singing ALA Family
Affair
There is something about
brothers coming together to sing in harmony that is
very special. There are numerous examples of this
in pop music.
Vocal Music
Bands
Vocal music from groups such,
as the Beach Boys, The Jackson 5, the Everly
Brothers and the Bee Gees have all been the result
of brotherly harmony.
No one else could reproduce
the sound of the Wilson brothers when they
harmonized in the Beach Boys and the Gibbs brothers
gave the Bee Gees a unique sound.
Of course, there are the
Osmonds too. The future of vocal music is secure.
We will always admire the power of the human voice,
whether it is the operatic splendor of Pavarotti or
the ethereal quality of Anthony from Anthony and
the Johnsons.
No matter where you stand in
regards to individual musical tastes, The human
voice is an instrument that cannot be surpassed.
That is why vocal music is mainstream and will most
likely stay that way!
