  • Diaphragm and Breathing Methods
  • Tips for Reaching the High Notes

Learning How to Sing Better Begins with Healthy Habits
Let’s face it – if you exercised your body every day but only ate junk food, you would not see much improvement, would you? Same goes for your voice. You need to develop a routine in good health for your vocal cords and be careful not to overdo it to keep from straining your throat. This is a balancing act and you will learn as we go along in the tips.

Singing Goals
Decide first the type of songs you like, what you consider important to learn, whether you want to learn how to sing for fun or to become a professional, etc. All these things will determine your practice schedule and the amount of time it will take for you to make the progress desired.

Learn Diaphragm Breathing Methods
Any online course or sound teacher will tell you that learning breath control and maintaining the right posture comes first, as this is responsible for producing the perfect tone in your voice.

Ideally, you have to stand straight but in a relaxed position; shoulders, hands, and feet in one line; and with one foot slightly in front. Heave your chest upwards with shoulders arched back, though you should still be in a comfortable standing position.

The correct singing posture can be easily mastered with the help of an easy exercise. Position your feet, hands, and shoulders in one line, with the arms aligned straight along the sides. Rotate the arms across the body and over the head while standing on the toes and inhaling deeply.

Exhale slowly while dropping the arms to the sides and placing feet fully on the flat surface. The chest and shoulders, however, should be maintained at the same position which you established while raising the arms and maintaining a fully stretched elongated position over the head. Muscles of the spinal cord, abdomen, and diaphragm should work together in a synchronized manner.

Improving Your Singing Voice and Hitting High Notes
Breath control and correct posture form the basis of learning to sing in the right manner. What follows is sustaining and improving quality and tone placement.

The vocal tone resonates basically in three fundamental areas: the head (sinuses), the pharynx (throat and mouth), and the chest. The logic to be applied is that you use your “chest voice” to generate lower notes and the  ”head voice” to generate high notes.

Often enough, a “mixed tone” as it is commonly called is used, which is actually a combination of both the “head voice” and “chest voice.” When both of them are combined, we get what is called the “mask resonance.” It is so called, as a half-face Halloween mask would cover the area where the sound is supposed to resonate.

The great thing is that you really can learn how to sing better – maybe even use some of these singing tips on stage one day! Imagine – you as a performer; stranger things have happened so take a moment to mark this page as one of your favorite music places to visit and we will go through the lessons and tips together.

Introduction:
My name is Bob Pardue and I have played in groups over the years and have done a bit of singing. Know what the odd thing is? I’m still learning too! No matter how much I discover there is always other methods to improve the singing voice so never stop gathering and practicing new techniques as a singer.

Let’s Get Started – Guard Your Voice
Yes, there is a wrong way and a right way to learn how to sing, whether you believe it or not. To put it in a more accurate manner, we could say there is a healthier and more sustainable way in contrast to a sometimes dangerous and unhealthy way of singing.

Develop Vocal Quality Through Healthy Habits
It does not matter if you take up singing purely as a recreational hobby rather than to earn a living with it. Developing a superior voice quality that is appealing and can last forever is the need.

The only way you can do this is to ensure you are in the pink of health and physically very active. To sustain good health, you need to have a nourishing and well-balanced diet, regular exercise, and proper sleep. Do not indulge in excess alcohol, illegal drugs, or smoking.

Early to Bed …
The audience, along with friends and family members believe that good singers party hard, which is not generally true. Recording artists who have sustained their career over a lengthy period of time have invariably been healthy and active throughout.

They have never been prone to over indulgence as was seen in the case of great performers such as Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, as Janis Joplin who never managed to extend their lives through healthy habits.

Why Do You Want to Learn How to Sing?
First, establish what you want to improve your voice for. No matter if you want to learn how to sing as a recreational hobby or to earn a living as a performer, you will have to adopt a structured method to learn singing and create a lasting quality.

Prepare to Work!
Singing is similar to any other profession and requires a structured study format similar to how an accountant or nurse would study in their specific career-oriented school or college. Lessons could be taught by a local teacher, or you could go online and enroll yourself into a singing program like Singorama by Emily Mander or the speech level Singing Success offered by trainer Brett Manning.

How It Works
You must understand how the voice mechanism in your body works and how you could utilize it to your advantage. Any method you adopt will teach you how to identify, avoid, or rectify problems in your voice. Learning can be actually a fun process, if you find the right program or teacher.

More Diaphragm Singing Developments
Try and sustain the expansion in the midsection once you have inhaled large amounts of air by producing a hissing sound while exhaling. Some effort and time will have to be devoted to strengthen the muscles; however, you will learn how to sing with a much better tonal quality and without exhausting yourself. You will generally sing a song the right way.

What Breathing Exercise Will Do
A simple exercise will help you experience “mask resonance.” Inhale deeply with proper breath control. Beginning singing at a high note using the syllables “hee” or “hoo,” and then attain the level at the bottom. It is similar to how you would yawn. If the indication is vibration you would feel it at the roof of your mouth or soft palate and the triangular portion between the bridge of the nose and eyes.

Next Tip – Positioning The Larynx
Another effective way of understanding how to sing better is by freeing your larynx of tension. The larynx is similar to a small container holding the vocal cords, and is very often called the voice box. Muscles support and surround the voice box, which is made of cartilage.

Voice Box and Tone Quality
The tones created while singing a song are actually regulated by the larynx. The following process is involved in producing a sound.

Once the decision to sing is made, the brain takes over and readies the vocal cords

  • Folds in the vocal cord begin to close
  • Lungs force the air upwards
  • Vocal cords begin to vibrate as the air strikes its folds

A close look at the larynx will reveal the trachea tube connected to the vocal cords within the larynx. Above it is the epiglottis. Folds within the vocal cords begin to vibrate when the air rises up and is known as subglottic pressure.

Finding Your Voice Box
By gently placing a finger at the throat base, the larynx can be felt. It tends to move downwards when you attempt to swallow something or simply yawn. When the larynx reaches the lower position, it indicates that the throat is open. In this position, air can flow through easily and is ideal to produce rich and solid tones.

The Best Tones for Singers
Your singing is directly affected by how the larynx is positioned and the subglottic pressure. Airflow to the vocal cords must be managed precisely while keeping the larynx in the central or lower position in order to learn how to sing better.

As tension is developed in the larynx, some of that pressure is generated forcing the vocal flaps to close completely. It will result in excess pressure, which can force the flaps open resulting in a sound very similar to a clicking noise. The condition, commonly known as the glottal attack, occurs even before a tone is generated.

Vibrating vocal cord folds initiate a tone as you begin to sing, and the onset is known as glottal attack. The vocal cords must be protected from undue pressure, and the ideal condition arises when the air is able to flow through smoothly.

Remember these five points to produce the best singing tone:

  1. Adopting a wrong posture may allow the air that to escape through, as it causes incomplete closure of the vocal cords.
  2. A breathy sound emanating from a singer indicates that excess air is actually flowing through the vocal cords
  3. A nasal tone is produced when the larynx is pushed upwards.
  4. Vocal cords will be ineffective and produce a low-quality tone, if the muscles surrounding the larynx get tense
  5. Vocal cords can get damaged if glottal attacks keep occurring often

It is quite clear that the tonal quality really depends on the larynx to sound its best.

Exercising Proper Voice Control
It is often misunderstood that the vocal cords cannot be controlled. However, even a slight change in the way your head is positioned can affect the way the vocal cords are able to close or open appropriately.

So, it is absolutely vital that you adopt the right posture. In order to ensure the larynx is in the lower position, the head should be held straight in order to align the neck and spine in the same line. The jaw must be totally relaxed. The vocal cords may tighten up if the muscles around the larynx tighten up.
