Brett Manning Speaks on Music Terminology

Who is Brett Manning?
This video features Brett Manning, founder and writer of the well known Singing Success course for aspiring singers.  Brett has been a voice coach to the stars for many years.  Here’s his take on using fancy Music terminology.  He explains why certain terms are important in teaching and learning to sing, but still have very little with the actual singing.

What Is It?
When it comes to music terminology, it doesn’t matter what it’s called…. but what does matter is “what it is” and “what it does.”  You don’t have to know the names of all the throat and neck muscles to sing well.  Ray Charles didn’t use music terminology to describe his singing. What a singer knows
It’s more about the soul of a person than about knowing exactly what you’re doing or what your muscles are doing while singing.  You don’t have to know all the medical terms, but it’s good to know these when teaching singing.  As a voice coach, it’s great to know what’s happening with someones voice and vocal cords… especially when they are having a tough time hitting certain notes or reaching a higher octave.

Terms for the Singer?
As for the singer, the audio responses, feelings and sensations in the feedback when singing is enough.  There’s plenty of research about singing and music, but what’s important is being able to actually portray it to others through voice!  You can know what “head voice” means and still not know how to sing in head voice.  The same goes for falsetto, chest voice, whistle voice, etc.

A better singer? – Not necessarily
Brett explains that musical terminology is basically used as a means to communicate when talking about singing…. but it doesn’t necessarily make someone a good or bad singer!  The terminology enables a voice teacher to give instruction and tips as well as help the student reach their goals.  If you’re ready to learn more about singing, You’ll love the vocal information in this free ebook on how to sing better.

I hope you enjoyed this video and singing tutorial and look forward to seeing you in the next music lesson.
